Providing cemeteries has traditionally been an important, though often overlooked, component of a council’s service obligations. While cemetery operations are often a relatively small component of most council’s responsibilities, the reality of increasing financial pressures, growing commercialisation of the funerary industry, and an aging population, there are many reasons why planning for the future of cemeteries is an important tool to guide investment and operational needs.
Locale Consulting has developed both cemetery strategies and master plans for Shoalhaven City Council, Wingecarribee Shire Council, Wollondilly Shire Council, Blacktown City Council, Penrith City Council, The Hills Shire Council, Newcastle City Council, Central Coast Council and Dubbo Regional Council, as well as a business plan for Lismore City Council’s cemeteries business unit.
The intent of these projects was to provide a long-term view of these businesses and the infrastructure or space needed to maintain their long-term needs. Cemetery space is often at a premium, with changing industry trends and consumer expectations all needing to be considered within a strategic and budgetary framework to suit long-term investments.
These projects have enabled local councils to plan for the long term future of cemeteries in their local government areas. They have also given Locale Consulting a unique insight into regional cemetery operations, trends within the industry and knowledge of the recent legislation.
